Chapter Twenty

Declan jerked awake. Metal doors clanged, the sound loud in the concrete space. Several men were being led into the cell. He squeezed his eyes shut and opened them again. It wasn’t a dream.

“Good morning, sunshine.”

Declan whipped his head up, then winced, wishing he hadn’t. His head was pounding and his neck was stiff. His gaze fell on a very large man standing above him.

“You sleep well?”

Declan surveyed the cell. There were five men inside altogether. Somehow, Declan had fallen asleep sitting up against the wall. That would explain the stiff neck.

“Hey, I’m talking to you.” The large man put his hands on his hips.

Declan looked up at him again and squinted. His headache was making it very hard to focus. “No, I didn’t.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Were our accommodations not good enough for you?”

What did this guy want? An excuse to fight? “Your accommodations?”

“Yes, my goddamn accommodations. You slept in my spot.”

He stood up and moved. “Oh sorry, I didn’t realize. Didn’t you just get here?”

One of the other men in the cell laughed.

“You’re sorry? How does that make up for my sore back? How does that make up for the fact I had to find somewhere else to sleep last night?”

He shook his head. The man had just arrived. Was he high? Declan was in a bad movie, one that needed to end. Now. He scanned the room. There were two beds and only one was taken. There was a second bench just like the one he had been sitting on. There was plenty of room.

“You weren’t here when I fell asleep.”

“Don’t matter. Everyone knows that’s my seat.” The large man took a step closer. They were mere inches apart now. Declan had to look up to make eye contact, not something he was used to.

“O’Sullivan!” an officer called from the other side of the cell. “To the door. Now.”

He shrugged at the large man. “Sorry.”

“Put your hands through.”

He put his hands through the opening and the officer placed handcuffs around his wrists. Then the officer opened the door and led him down a hallway to a small room.

“Wait in here.”

The officer left. He took in the room. The walls were dark gray. No windows, no mirrors, no posters. Just a table and two chairs.

Interrogation room.

What felt like an hour later, an officer came in.

“Follow me.”

He did, then he spotted his dad and his dad’s attorney. Relief washed over him until he saw the expression on his dad’s face.

“Declan, my attorney was able to get you released. Unfortunately, there’s one catch.” Sully had his fake smiled plastered on his face. It was the one he wore in public so no one knew what he was really thinking. He pointed to the attorney. “You remember Bob Drummond? He’s been my attorney for years.”

“Declan.” The other man held out his hand.

Declan shook it. “Thank you.”

“Here are your clothes. You can change in there.” An officer handed him a bag and pointed to a bathroom.

Declan changed and then followed Sully and the attorney to the parking garage.
